Nuclebras Equipamentos Pesados S.A. (NUCLEP)

Nuclebras Equipamentos Pesados S.A. (NUCLEP), located in Itaguai, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was founded in December 1975 to design and fabricate heavy components for the primary circuits of nuclear power plants.

With the slowing down of the national nuclear programme in the 1980s, NUCLEP capitalized on its high-level industrial and technological capacities to enter new markets. It established partnerships with some of the country's top companies and started to produce sophisticated components for the non-nuclear energy sector and for the offshore, naval, mining, oil and chemical industries of Brazil. In 1986, the Brazilian Navy requested NUCLEP to develop and fabricate the pressure hulls for a series of submarines.

Wärtsilä signed a licence agreement in January 2006 with NUCLEP. The agreement grants NUCLEP the right to manufacture Wärtsilä’s most modern electronically-controlled common-rail two-stroke marine diesel engines with bore sizes between 50 and 68 cm at its premises in Itaguai with a targeted annual output of six to ten engines.

CSSC Guangzhou Marine Diesel Engine Co., Ltd (GMD) 

CSSC Guangzhou Marine Diesel Engine Co., Ltd (GMD) is a new Wartsila licensee since 19 July 2011 and is a member of CSSC *2. This company was established in 2008 and the factory is under construction at the moment, it’s based in Panyu District, Guangzhou, targets 3 mio. bhp production capacity for the first phase and can build all sizes of Wartsila low-speed engines. The delivery of its first engine is expected to take place at the end of year 2011.

CSSC-MES Diesel Co., Ltd. (CMD)

CSSC-MES Diesel Co., Ltd. (CMD) was established in 2006 as a joint venture of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, China CSSC Holdings Ltd, and Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co Ltd with its factory in Shanghai Lingang (heavy equipment production area). The factory is designed for annual production capacity of 2.6 million kW. Today CMD has already reached an annual production capacity of 1.5 million kW.

Wärtsilä and CSSC-MES Diesel Co Ltd (CMD) have jointly signed a licence agreement for the manufacture and sale of Wärtsilä low-speed marine diesel engines by CMD in China. The agreement grants CMD the right to manufacture all sizes of Wärtsilä RTA and RT-flex modern low-speed engine types at its factory in Shanghai. However, CMD will focus on engines of 70 cm cylinder bore and larger. The first Wärtsilä engine 7RT-flex82T will be delivered in August 2011.

Dalian Marine Diesel Co., Ltd. (DMD)

Dalian Marine Diesel Co., Ltd. (DMD) is a Wärtsilä licensee since 1978. DMD is a member of CSIC *1. The company focuses on bigger engines with bore sizes from 50 to 96cm. The annual production capacity is 1.5 million kW. In November 2010, China's first Wärtsilä 7RT-flex84T-D engine manufactured by DMD was delivered.

Hefei Rong'An Power Machinery Co., Ltd. (RPM)

Hefei Rong'An Power Machinery Co., Ltd. (RPM) signed a licence agreement to build all sizes of Wärtsilä low-speed engines. The new factory is equipped with modern machinery. The first Rong'An-Wärtsilä engine, a 6RT-flex68-D, was successfully delivered in October 2009. In June 2010, China's first 7RT-flex82T engine manufactured by Rong'An was delivered.

Hudong Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd. (HHM) is a Wärtsilä licensee since 1995. HHM is a member of CSSC *2. The company is the biggest engine manufacturer in China focusing on engines with bore sizes between 48 and 70 cm. Annual production capacity is 1.5 million kW.

Qingdao Qiyao Wärtsilä MHI Linshan Marine Diesel Co. Ltd. (QMD)

Qingdao Qiyao Wärtsilä MHI Linshan Marine Diesel Co. Ltd. (QMD) was established as a joint venture company owned by CSIC (50%), Wärtsilä (34%) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (16%). The company became operational in the fourth quarter of 2008. They produce low speed two-stroke marine diesel engines mainly for the Chinese market in a power range of 8'300 kW to 74'360 kW. QMD's factory is equipped with modern machinery facilites.

Yichang Marine Diesel Engine Co., Ltd (YMD)

Yichang Marine Diesel Engine Co., Ltd (YMD) is a Wärtsilä licensee since 1978. YMD is a member of CSIC *1. The company focusses on engine bore sizes that are smaller than 620 mm. The annual production capacity is currently 1.1 million kW and will be increased to 1.5 million kW by 2015.

Zhenjiang CME Co., Ltd. (CME)   

Zhenjiang CME Co., Ltd. (CME) signed a licence agreement in 2008 to build Wärtsilä RT-flex common-rail low-speed engines. CME is a member of CSSC *2, located at Zhenjiang City in Jiangsu Province. CME will focus on building engines of 50 cm bore and smaller.

Yuchai Marine Power Co., Ltd (YCMP)

Yuchai Marine Power Co., Ltd (YCMP) is located at Zhuhai City in Guangdong Province. Founded in 1951, Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Group, the parent company of the new licensee, is located at Yulin City in Guangxi province in south-west China and is mainly in the truck and bus engine business. The licensee is building a new factory on a 333,000 m2 site at Fushan Industrial Zone, Zhuhai City for the manufacture of low-speed engines. The new factory will have an initial capacity to build engines with an aggregate output of about 0.9 million kW later increasing to 3.7 million kW. YCMP will complete their first Wärtsilä 6RT-flex35 engine in November 2011.

Under its wing, there are altogether 60 fully-owned enterprises and shareholding institutions, including a group of the most powerful and often renowned shipbuilding and ship-repairing yards, research and design institutes, marine-related equipment manufacturers and trading firms in China.

3. Maj Engines & Cranes Joint Stock Co.

3. Maj Engines & Cranes Joint - Stock Co. is the oldest licensee in Europe. The licence agreement was signed in January 1954. The production of deck cranes started in 1977 and currently accounts for a significant portion of production. In 2008 3. Maj has built the research engine RTX4 for our testing laboratory in Winterthur. Today, the annual production capacity of 3. Maj Engines & Cranes Joint – Stock Co. is up to 20 two-stroke engines depending on the engine size. The company focuses on bore sizes between 350 and 840mm.

Diesel United, Ltd. (DU)

Diesel United, Ltd. (DU) was established in 1988 as a result of the merger between the diesel engine divisions of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (IHI.) and Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (SHI). Those two companies had entered into licence agreements with then Sulzer Brothers Ltd., Switzerland in 1948 and 1950 respectively. During the past 60 years, DU built a large number of Sulzer and Wärtsilä engines for various types of ships such as bulkers, VLCCs and container ships. The production included many world first production engines of new engine types. As far as two-stroke diesel engines are concerned DU is unique in that, and it has, unlike other licensed engine builders, been producing only Wärtsilä engines under a single licence, as long as low-speed engines are concerned.

DU has produced the whole bore range from 48 to 96cm and will also focus on production of RT-flex35/40 and 82. The annual possible production capacity of Diesel United, Ltd. is around 0.7 million kW.

DU promotes RT-flex engines, which are fuel efficient and environmental friendly, to meet the needs of customers for today and in the future. To that end DU will exploit all its technical resources to enhance the reliability and competitiveness of RT-flex engines. DU has also developed their own monitoring system to secure safe engine operation. This is appreciated by the customers and local shipyards which have previously been using DU-built Sulzer engines.

Hitachi Zosen Corporation (Hitz)

Hitachi Zosen Corporation (Hitz) has a 130 year's history. About ten years ago, Hitachi moved its engine production from Osaka to Ariake on Kyushu Island. A new engine production works including assembly and shop test was opened in 1997 close to the Ariake shipyard of Universal Shipbuilding Corporation. In 2009 Hitachi has opened a new factory to enlarge their capacity up to 2 million bhp low-speed marine engines. Besides low-speed diesel engines Hitachi also produces gas turbines and nuclear power plant equipment. For Wärtsilä engines Hitachi is currently focusing on producing the RT-flex50 engine type.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI)

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) was established in 1934 and has grown to become one of the largest companies in Japan with a great variety of products. In 1917 Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. manufactured its first diesel engines. It is the longest-established current licensee of Wärtsilä, having the first licence for Sulzer diesel engines in 1925. Since then it has manufactured a large number of Mitsubishi-Wärtsilä low-speed engines.

Doosan Engine Co., Ltd.

Doosan Engine Co., Ltd. is located in Changwong, South-Korea. The company's line of business includes the production and supply of low- and medium-speed marine diesel engines operating between 500 kW and 80.000 kW. With an annual production capacity of 8 million kW. Doosan Engine currently has the second largest global market share with 25%.

The licence of Doosan Engine Co. goes back to 1984 when its predecessor company Korean Heavy Engineering Co. signed a technical licence agreement with Wärtsilä, under which the company builds now two-stroke diesels ranging from the RTA48T to RT-flex96C.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. - Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD)

The Engine & Machinery Division of Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI-EMD) is located in Ulsan, South-Korea. The company is a Wärtsilä licensee since 1975. HHI-EMD is the world’s largest marine engine builder with an annual production capacity of 9 million kW of low- and medium-speed engines with sizes between 500 kW and 80.000 kW for marine and stationary applications. HHI-EMD maintains 35% of the world's market for marine diesel engines and was able to celebrate the production milestone of 100 million bhp in low-speed diesel engines in September 2010.

H. Cegielski-Poznań S.A. (HCP S.A.)

H. Cegielski-Poznań S.A. (HCP S.A.) is one of oldest licensees of Wärtsilä two-stroke engines (starting in 1956). HCP delivers modern, reliable products such as low-speed two-stroke engines, piston and impeller type compressors as well as radial air blowers. The company focuses on bore sizes between 350 and 840mm with annual capacity of up to 28 two-stroke engines.

Bryansk Engineering Works (BMZ)

Bryansk Engineering Works (BMZ) is a subsidiary of Transmashholding, which is the largest manufacturer in Russia of transport machines. It was established in 2002. The headquarters are located in Moscow.

Manufacture of diesel engines for various purposes is being carried out in three manufacturing subsidiaries: the Bryansk (BMZ), Kolomna and Penza diesel plants.

BMZ is the only manufacturer of low-speed two-stroke diesel engines in Russia. The company has gained considerable experience in marine diesel engine building; it has been manufacturing low-speed diesel engines since 1961. Presently 1000 BMZ marine diesel engines are in operation. BMZ will focus on manufacturing Wärtsilä engines of up to 60 cm bore size, with power outputs from 4000 to 20'000 kW.

Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin)

As part of its strategy of developing its shipbuilding industry, by 2005 Vietnam had set up Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) which is establishing three shipbuilding centres in northern, central and southern Vietnam.

Vinashin will continue to develop shipbuilding infrastructure and its technical base to raise the capabilities of various shipyards to build large and “hi-tech” ships, serving the maritime, oil, gas and national defence industries. It will manufacture and assemble marine equipment, increasing the localisation of domestically-made material and equipment. Vinashin’s objective is to satisfy domestic and foreign demands for shipbuilding and ship repair services.

Vinashin and Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd. jointly signed a licence agreement in May 2007 for the manufacture and sale of Wärtsilä low-speed marine diesel engines in Vietnam. The agreement grants Vinashin the right to manufacture certain types of Wärtsilä modern low-speed engine types with bore sizes between 48 and 82 cm at its works in Vietnam.
